Silver Eco-Church Award for Oadby Baptist Church

Earlier in the month Oadby Baptist Church were delighted to find out that they had won a Silver Eco Church award (having gained bronze in 2022). The award reflects the desire for the community to care for God’s creation and operate in a way that minimises its impact on the planet. Key to the application was the creation of an Eco Charter which outlines the commitment of the congregation to continue to seek ways to take practical steps to care for the environment in the areas of worship & teaching, buildings, land, community & global engagement and lifestyle.

Oadby has developed a community garden – growing vegetables and wild flowers, which hosts a weekly drop in called A Place to Grow.

They have installed water butts to collect rainwater for the garden, as well as creating a composting area. Other initiatives include new cycle racks, a recycling area (soft plastics, tablet blister packs etc)  which is used by the wider community and switching over to more energy efficient appliances.

Details of the Eco Church scheme can be found here https://ecochurch.arocha.org.uk/

Oadby is willing to help any church considering going on this journey recognising that it can be very daunting.
